We have just bought a BladeCenter S (8886) at ITSCO with a 6 bay storage array.
A SAS Connectivity module (39Y9192) is installed as well as a SAS expansion card (39Y9187) in each blade (HS21).

The SAS connectivity module is reporting SAS disks in the 6 bay storage array fine, but SATA disks (IBM or any other SATA disk, such as Hitachi) are reported as fault by the SAS Connectivity module , although the SAS connectivity module should support SATA disks according to the documentation.

I know the SATA disks tried are not on the BladeCenter S supported SATA disk list, but I have been running unsupported Hitachi 2TB SATA drives on an older X3650 server without any problems for over 3 years and the RedBooks and User manual of the BladeCenter S do not mention any requirements for SATA drives.

Are there any requirements for SATA disk to be recognised on BladeCenter S?

Many thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Jeroen

Hello jeroen99,

unfortunatally it is only possible to us to give you the same information you already know.
You could try to ask the manufacturer:

Hello,

the integrated SAS disk controller on IBM BladeCenter HS21 (should be a LSI Logic 1064E if it's type 8853) doesn't support SAS and SATA disks in the same volume. Furthermore the controller only supports disks with 512 byte sectors. Maybe this is an explanation for the occured error.

Hello,

Thanks for the swift response.

I was not aware of the 512 bytes sector size limitation. The HS21 blades are indeed 8853.
According to the manufacturer(http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/6A7E7E6848832B7786257603007AAF5E/$file/DS7K2000_DS_final.pdf), the sector size should be 512 bytes and I have also tried with smaller disks (IBM SATA 500GB, older Seagate 120GB SATA).

I know I cannot mix SATA and SAS, so I also tried a diskless HS21 with the SAS daughter card, without success unfortunately.

The SAS Connectivity module is reporting the disk as faulty, even without connecting a HS21 (although this should not necessary mean that these disks would be inaccessible).

Maybe it has to do with single port vs. dual port SATA/SAS. I have found a spare single port SAS disk (not SATA) also reported by the SAS connectivity module reported as faulty.
I have also placed this issue on an IBM forum, hopefully someone of IBM will be willing to answer this query.

I will update this forum as soon as I have more information.

Cheers,

Jeroen

Hello Jeroen,

i guess you already got the clue, because in the redbook "Implementing the IBM BladeCenter S Chassis" (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247682.pdf) there's also stated:

"Available drives for 6-drive disk storage module in BladeCenter S"

"3.5 inch Hot-Swap SATA
43W7630 5561 1 TB 7.2 K Dual Port SATA Yes No 12 (6 per DSM)"

Cheers !nSiDi0uS

Hello !nSiDi0uS,

Thanks for the response.
I have read that indeed, but it doesn't necessarily mean other types of disks wouldn't work, but it is becoming more and more likely though.

Best Regards,

Jeroen
